Hey, Teachers—Make Your Own Six-Word Memoir Classroom Book!
“I miss all my imaginary friends.” —Torin, age 8
”Born to be a spy, unknowable.” —Nathan, age 10
”Finally learned that ‘weird’ is a compliment.” —Stella, age 14
The end of the school year is right around the corner. And what a year it’s been. If you’re a teacher, we'd love to help you create a time capsule for your students in a Six-Word Memoir book that showcases them as proud and published authors. It takes just 30-60 minutes to complete the Six-Word lesson plan with your class and myself, or another Six in Schools team member can walk you through the process or even lead a virtual classroom kickoff. Head on over to the Six In Schools to book a time to meet or get started on your own.
See what students have created!
Teacher Appreciation Month: A Six Words Live Backstory Show!
“I taught math, they taught resiliency.” — Loryn Gavula, OH
”Teaching: Opportunities to grow alongside students.” —Eden Dunckel, MA
”Noun: Zoom. Verb: Zoom. Adjective: Zoom.” —Jennifer Schneider, KY
The first Six-Word Memoir in the new collection of stories on the pandemic by teachers, students, and parents.
In honor of Teacher Appreciation week in May, I'm hosting a "Six Words on Why I Teach" Zoom event with the Write Now Studio Teacher Studio, a community where teachers write, share, and talk shop about writing and the teaching of writing. If you'd like to share your six words on teaching (and maybe even a 3-6 minute backstory during our live Zoom event), join the Studio, a free and wonderful community, and share your six words by April 22.
Six-Word Poetry Slam Contest!
After the publication of our first book of Six-Word Memoirs, a reviewer from the St. Louis Post Dispatch announced, “Let’s dub this American Haiku.” In honor of April’s National Poetry month, we’re giving this “American Haiku” a poetic spin as we challenge you to write a poem in exactly six words. Your approach to six word poetry can be silly or sacred, playful or profound. You may choose to invoke your inner Seuss and make the words rhyme or channel Sylvia Plath and take us to the dark side.
One winner in each category will receive the Six-Word Memoir book of their choice.
• Most heartfelt
• Funniest
• Six Word poem that is also a Haiku — that’s 5, 7, 5 (syllables not words).
